APPLICATIONS TO LABORATORY TESTS & FIELD CASE
Prof. Jean Vaunat, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain

The development of unsaturated Soil Mechanics put in evidence the crucial role played by the distribution of water within soil pores in the hydraulic and mechanical response of the material. This distribution is intrinsically related to the fabric and microstructure of the material which should therefore be introduced in the models, through at least some idealized features.  In this seminar, the modeling of unsaturated materials with increasing level of microstructural complexity is tackled: collapsible silt, expansive clay, argillaceous rock and expansive clay rock. The bases of the model are initially described and its application to the modeling of laboratory tests and instrumented field cases (foundation collapse, tunneling, rock weathering) presented.
